#HappyBirthday #5 @Twitter

On the first official day of spring we have more to celebrate than wonderful weather. We can also celebrate the 5th birthday of our beloved Twitter. The first tweet was posted by co-founder Jack Dorsey on March 21, 2006 with the message “inviting coworkers”.

Now the ever growing and popular 140-character messaging service has well over 200 million users, from your best friends, news services, restaurants all the way to your mother and grandparents.

Twitter has become quite the news source in the event of emergencies and natural disasters. They say they set a record of 6,939 tweets per second just after the 9.0-magnitude quake in Japan on March 11, and 177 million tweets were sent throughout the day.

It took three years, two months and a day for Twitter to get to one billion tweets. The site now averages 140 million tweets a day.

Twitter is a privately held company but just last month the Wall Street Journal reported that suitors were valuing it at $8 to $10 billion. I guess we can only wait and see of the next 5 years are just as successful for them. Let’s hope they don’t go the way of MySpace.
