{"id":3187,"date":"2018-11-22T18:47:53","date_gmt":"2018-11-22T18:47:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jboitnott.com\/?p=3187"},"modified":"2020-04-21T19:36:42","modified_gmt":"2020-04-21T19:36:42","slug":"new-study-health-care-is-freelancers-biggest-concern","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jboitnott.com\/zh\/new-study-health-care-is-freelancers-biggest-concern\/","title":{"rendered":"New Study: Freelancer Healthcare is Biggest Concern"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A just-released research report from Fiverr finds more than 40 percent of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jboitnott.com\/zh\/use-traditional-marketing-promote-freelance-business-holidays\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"follow noopener noreferrer\">freelancers<\/a>\u00a0see\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/topic\/health-insurance\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"follow noopener noreferrer\">health insurance<\/a> as the most pressing issue they\u2019re facing leading up to the 2018 midterm elections. 41 percent say freelancer healthcare benefits are a key reason why they maintain a full-time job.<\/p>\n<p>The online freelance platform interviewed more than 1,200 freelancers for \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.freelance-perspectives.fiverr.com\/Fiverr_v2a.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><i>The Freelance Political Perspective Report<\/i><\/a>.\u201d Freelancers answered a series of questions on unique\u00a0challenges they face\u00a0as well as various political issues that affect them.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Freelancers and non-freelancers agree and disagree on major issues.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>According to the report, freelancers share many of the same views as their fellow U.S. citizens who do not freelance. About 34 percent of freelancers said their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/article\/317524\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"follow noopener noreferrer\">financial situation<\/a> is getting worse. Roughly the same percent of the overall adult population feels the same, according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/harvardharrispoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Final_HHP_Jun2018_RegisteredVoters_Topline_Memo.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Harvard-Harris poll<\/a>\u00a0from June. About 31 percent of freelancers said their financial situation is getting better, similar to that of their non-freelance peers.<\/p>\n<p>Freelancers and non-freelancers disagree much more than that in other areas, especially healthcare. While more than 40 percent of say freelancer healthcare is their biggest issue, a little less than one in three people among the general population agree. Interestingly, only 34 percent of freelancers said the country is heading in the right direction, while 39 percent of typical adults say it is.<\/p>\n<p>Freelancers also hold some other strong opinions that differ starkly from the general population:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Freelancers are more likely to show support for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/topic\/affordable-care-act\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"follow noopener noreferrer\">Affordable Care Act<\/a>\u00a0(ACA) (54 percent vs.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.isidewith.com\/poll\/965572\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">44 percent<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Support for a single-payer healthcare system (59 percent vs.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.isidewith.com\/poll\/3244269081\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">48 percent<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Increased funding of healthcare for low-income individuals (75 percent vs.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.isidewith.com\/poll\/894292236\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">58 percent<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Freelancers want greater access to \u201cportable benefits.\u201d<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Freelancers want to take their benefits wherever they go. 80 percent of freelancers surveyed say they don\u2019t think the government is doing enough to support flexible working with portable benefits. 85 percent say it\u2019s important to keep benefits without them being tied to a job. 41 percent of \u201cside hustle\u201d freelancers say they hang on to traditional jobs just to keep the benefits, rather than become full-time freelancers.<\/p>\n<p>As the Open Enrollment period for the ACA recently arrived, Fiverr and Postmates partnered on a digital ad campaign to encourage workers to sign-up for healthcare coverage. Both companies want to provide their freelance pool with beneficial resources and assist them in making informed decisions.<\/p>\n<p>The companies conducted webinars about healthcare plan options. Postmates also conducted its own trial health savings account program for workers in partnership with Starship HSA.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Freelancers appear to support more progressive policies.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>In general, freelancers expressed a desire to change the tax system more than the general population. They believe the rich should carry a greater portion of the country\u2019s tax burden.<\/p>\n<p>75 percent support reforms to give tax breaks to companies to help keep jobs in the US. 75 percent support raising taxes on the rich, and 74 percent support raising the minimum wage. Such changes could provide freelancers with more financial stability and income to apply to savings or retirement.<\/p>\n<p>Freelancers also expressed broad support for additional protection against sexual harassment, as well as greater access to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/article\/286082\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"follow noopener noreferrer\">continued education programs and resources<\/a>.<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>If you want to know where the opinions of average Americans may be headed, look no further than freelancers. They now number more than <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.freelancersunion.org\/2014\/09\/04\/53million\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">53 million<\/a>. They\u2019re set to represent 40 percent of the workforce by 2020, according to an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/http-download.intuit.com\/http.intuit\/CMO\/intuit\/futureofsmallbusiness\/intuit_2020_report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Intuit<\/a>\u00a0report.<\/p>\n<p>More people are moving away from working full-time. They&#8217;re going freelance, and desire for adequate access to healthcare and a higher minimum wage will only increase.<\/p>\n<p>A fascinating finding of this report is that around 25 percent of freelancers are undecided on which way to vote. That equates to roughly 14 million votes. Smart politicians will look at that and realize the benefits of helping this population. Freelancers want laws that support\u00a0more flexible working conditions, a more equitable tax system\u00a0and higher wages.
