The government will soon be implementing a new tool in it's effort to inform the public of possible terrorist actions. The system that was designed after 9/11 will be shelved for a more modern one using the likes of Twitter and Facebook.
The new system, which will roll out April 28th, will have only two levels, "elevated" and "imminent". Under the new system, an "elevated" alert would warn of a credible threat against the US. Whereas an "imminent" alert would warn about a credible, specific and impending terrorist threat or an ongoing attack against the US.
Terror alerts may be broadcast on Twitter and Facebook only "when appropriate", according to a previously top-secret document. Threats are made public only when members of Congress, various counter-terrorism officials, governors and mayors have been notified. The document even specifies how many minutes US officials can wait before organising urgent conference calls to discuss pending threats.
